TWELVE BAR BLUES

TWELVE BAR BLUES

The twelve bar blues is a repetitive chord sequence made up of twelve "bars". In 4/4 time, a "bar" is made up of FOUR beats, in 3/4 time, a "bar" is made up,of THREE beats.

In the key of "C", the simple twelve bar blues looks like this :

(C) (C) (C) (C)

(F) (F) (C) (C)

(G7) (F) (C) (C)

Each chord is played with a rhythm pattern (eg 1,2,3,4   or  1,2,3 and 4 and

Use your imagination!  When you have gone through the twelve bars, you start all over again!

Variations:

1) We can change the FOURTH BAR to a Seventh chord. It will now look like this:

(C) (C) (C) (C7)

(F) (F)  (C) (C)

(G7) (F) (C) (C)

2)  Change the very last bar to (G7). This is called a "turnaround" and signals you to start playing the sequence all over again. Play this chord with four very definite down strums in 4/4 time or three in 3/4 time.

(C) (C) (C) (C7)

(F) (F)  (C)  (C)

(G7) (F) (C) (G7)

                     One,two,three four.

3) Play the twelve bar blues in different keys, different rhythms and  different tempos. The sky is the limit!

4) Make Mum and Dad sing old rock songs to you and amaze them with your playing ability!
